How do I get a trial copy of MEXL?
A: Marketing Engineering for Excel can be downloaded from the software section of our site and is fully functional for a 14 day demonstration period.

I've installed the trial. How do I access the models?
A: After installation, when you open Excel, you will be presented with a Marketing Engineering for Excel dialog box. Click the "Exit" button to continue with your free trial. You should now have a new menu (ME►XL) added to your Excel toolbar (in Office 2002/2003) or to your Add-Ins menu (in Office 2007).

Will MEXL work with Vista?  How about Excel 2007?
A: MEXL supports Windows XP and Vista using Excel XP, 2003 and 2007. Windows 2000 users are limited to Excel XP and 2003.

How is Marketing Engineering tool different from other tools like SPSS/SAS etc.
A: Marketing Engineering for Excel has been developed specifically to address marketing analytic issues in marketing terms rather than generic statistical terms.  Further, our integrated Help function, Tutorials and Wizards are tailored to the professional marketer to facilitate analysis using terms and concepts generally used in the profession.  Marketing Engineering for Excel complements our new text, Principles of Marketing Engineering to better empower marketing professionals.

My experience is limited to seeing Marketing Engineering software several years ago…how does the new product differ?
A: The Marketing Engineering for Excel software package has been completely re-designed to function as an Excel Add-in. Offering the flexibility of Excel with the power of world-class analytics, MEXL allows marketing managers to quickly analyze marketing data. With context-sensitive Help menus built in and tutorials for each model, MEXL is very user friendly.

If I already have installed Marketing Engineering Classic v2.4 software, are there any incompatibility issues with Marketing Engineering for Excel?
A: ME "Classic" and our new MEXL can coexist on your PC. Any user-prepared ME “Classic” data will need to be converted to Excel file format to be used in MEXL.

Can the data from an Excel spreadsheet be copied to this software to run the analysis?
A: MEXL is an Excel add-in, so no copying is required.  Whether using an MEXL template or self-entered data, the user simply highlights the appropriate cells where data is available in an Excel spreadsheet when prompted by the software.

Does MEXL perform data mining?
A:  Our MEXL software does not specifically include tools that perform “data mining”.  However, our Segmentation and Choice modeling tools can handle customer/market data of the type typically used in data mining.  The software will be enhanced (Late Spring 2008) to include Latent Class analysis to further enhance those capabilities.  These enhancements will be available as a free upgrade to purchasers of the MEXL software.

Where is the MEXL menu?
A: When you start Excel, the MEXL menu will appear along with the other Excel menu bars along the top of the Excel window. When you run one of our models, a NEW workbook is created with the results. To run additional analyses, you will need to return to the original workbook.

On some of the resulting MEXL output sheets, the MEXL menu is not present…is this by design?
A: When the MEXL output is not suited for additional analysis (a Perceptual Map, for example) we suppressed the MEXL menu since no MEXL functions can be performed using the data on the sheet. MEXL uses Excel cells in worksheets as input, so any output not in the form of a cell-based worksheet will have the menu suppressed.

I have an Excel worksheet with my data, how do I submit my data to a model?
A: Data from any worksheet can be submitted to our models, as long as it meets the data format structure the model requires. Users may want to use the Generate Template feature of the model to see the data format required (our generated templates offer pre-selection of data when analysis is run, so users may find our templates a useful tool to migrate their data).

Is MEXL compatible w/ Excel for the Mac OS?
A: Marketing Engineering for Excel is not compatible with the Mac version of Excel. However, MEXL should run within a virtual PC environment if the Window's version of Excel is installed.

Can I purchase a single model from the MEXL suite?
A: In late Spring 2008 we will introduce a single-model license option allowing users to purchase one of the models in the suite. Pricing for single model licenses will be considerably lower that full-suite pricing.

Are there reference books that describe the analytics behind the MEXL models?
A: Professors Lilien, Rangaswamy and De Bruyn have published several texts that provide background material on the science of Marketing Engineering. Additionally, we offer a Technical Note series on the web that provides the analytic background of our models.

Is there a structured course of program available that teaches the material presented in Marketing Engineering?
A: ISBM offers programs that teach fundamental Segmentation-Targeting-Positioning techniques, using MEXL. Please visit http://www.smeal.psu.edu/isbm/seminars for a list of free and fee-based offerings.
